Staplegrove 2nd XI v Watchet 2nd XI

Watchet’s return to division 2 of the Somerset second X1 league got off to a disappointing start on Saturday, losing to Staplegrove by 5 wickets. Losing the toss and being asked to bat, Watchet’s openers Pete Manley and Adam Bishop started with confidence and both were hitting the ball cleanly on a very good early season wicket. 54 runs were on the board when Bishop was well caught at cover off Craddock for 23. Chris Wookey joined his skipper and hit a brisk 10 before playing round a straight one from Craddock. Chris Bishop joined Manley to take the score to 84 when the latter holed out for 37. Wickets now fell at regular intervals with only Simon Chilcott able to show any resistance hitting 25 but the last wicket fell at 127, which was a total of a minimum 50 runs short!

In reply Staplegrove lost their 1st wicket with 0 on the board when Wookey trapped Wiltshire L.B.W in the opening over. Shortly afterwards he clean bowled Trump to leave the home side on 14 for 2. Parsons then joined Templeman to steady the ship and the pair took the score past 80 when the introduction of Taylor Maddock had veteran Templeman caught by Dave Milton. He then trapped Benningworth for 0 and Chilcott returned to bowl Denovan but with Parsons hitting the ball cleanly he saw the home side past Watchet’s total with few further problems to finish undefeated on 61.
