Staplegrove 1st XI v Watchet 1st XI 2010 |

Newly Promoted Watchet started the the season with an away fixture at Staplegrove. After a length delay for rain, the match was reduced to thirty five overs a-side. Winning the toss, Watchet asked their hosts to bat first.
Opening bowlers Chris Wookey and Liam Woolgrove produced a lively opening spell and with lick could have picked up some early wickets. Staplegrove made an excellent start with the help of some poor Watchet catching. Liam Woolgrove took a fine catch in the deep. Andrew Pyne, Martin Stong, Liam Woolgrove and Matt Lovell shared the wickets. Staplegrove set Watchet a total of 185. Watchet openend the batting with the attacking combination of Wookey and Martin Strong. Both fell early to attacking shots. Martin Ketchen and Edward Martin then produced the partnership that gave Watchet more than a chance of victory. Ketchen batted aggresively and impressively. He fully deserved his maiden 1st XI fifty. Martin was the first to adjudged LBW for 20. Ketchen was the next to go brilliantly caught and bowled. Ryan Strong joined Andrew Martin and the pair tried to move the score along, Strong hitting a big six breaking slates on the roof of a nearby house. Martin holed out for 11 and Strong, although not given out sportingly walked for a caught behind appeal. Watchet tried to carry on the fight losing regular wickets in doing so and ended up 31 runs short with 9 wickets down at the close, giving Satplegrove the victory. |
