1st XI lose at home to Wedmore
The Martin Strong and his ground team must be congratulated for getting this match on following the extremely wet weather preceeding the match.
Unfortunately Watchet lost the important toss and were put in on the very wet pitch.
Openers Matt Lovell and Ed Martin made slow progress against a steady but accurate attack. Lovell again looked in great form but failed to convert his good start into a large score after being extremely well caught and bowled for 13.
Phil Milton looked in good touch. Martin was the next to go adjudged LBW for 16.
Adam Bishop playing his first 1st XI match of the season played a good innings. Milton was caught at point and a minor collapse occurred.
The highlights of the Watchet Innings were Jason Strongs 30 and Nick Virgin's 23.
The Watchet innings closed on 140 for 9.
This score though low ought to have been enough to win the match given the conditions. Indeed Matt Lovell made an early break through with the help of a catch by Jason Strong.
Two run outs and a wicket for Ryan Strong kept Watchet on track. The Watchet bowling was superb keeping Wedmore well behind the required scoring rate.
Some sloppy fielding and dire catching, with at least four straight forward catches being spilt enabled Wedmore to reach their target with less than four overs to go. Watchet will need to take their chances if they going to stand a chance of promotion. Two defeats from the opening three matches is not the start they were hoping for.
The second XI did not have a match yesterday.
1st XI beat Whitchchurch
The 1st XI played their home first match of the season and ended 5 wicket victors against Whitchurch.
Batting first Whichchurch got off to a fast positive start before Dominic Bowden got the first wicket with a caught behind. This was the first of the three for Edward Martin.
The introduction of slow bowlers Martin Strong and Andrew Pyne stemmed the run flow. Good fielding and catching, two by Andrew Martin and one each for Matt Lovell, Philip Milton, and Martin Strong reduced Whitchurch to 137 all out.
Watchet openers Matt Lovell and Ed Martin got off to a good start with Lovell looking in good touch. Lovell was first to go bowled throgh the gate for a fine 21. Phil Milton came to the wicket and batted very sensibly to take Watchet towards their target. Martin was the next to go caught behind for 13. Jason Strong followed the same fete two balls later. His brother Ryan took his place at the wicket and played a lovely innnings of 24 to ensure the Watchet victory.
Milton was bowled for an excellent 42 leaving Clive Strong and Taz Maddock to knock the last few runs. Watchet gained a maximum 35 points from this 5 wicket victory.
