Wincanton 2nd XI v Watchet 2nd XI August 6th 2006 Watchet Seconds made the long trek to Wincanton and came away deserved winners by 58 runs despite a spirited batting performance from the home team, who played the game with just ten men.
Watchet batted first on a good wicket but lost Edward Martin, harshly adjudged caught behind in the second over. Skipper Pete Manley was finding the boundary even at this early stage and found a worthy ally in Jamie Milton who was scoring strongly square on the leg side. The partnership was moving along nicely but as Milton closed on a half century he was stumped attempting a big heave, falling six short of the milestone.

Strong, as Manley did previously, fell just afterwards with 51 to his name but this did not stymie the run rate due to David Milton eyeing up the short midwicket boundary at one end to smash three sixes and five fours in a brutal 53 before he was bowled. With good contributions from Andrew Martin and Callum Knight Watchet got up to a superb 271 for 7. Pick of the bowlers was A Coombes’ 3 for 65 in his 12 overs.
When Wincanton came in they were in trouble from the off, with both Andrew Martin and Dominic Bowden having excellent opening spells as the hosts lost three early wickets, two for Martin and one for Bowden.
The ship was steadied by Coombes and home skipper R Carswell who ran well and had an excellent partnership until Coombes went for a big shot over the top off David Milton and Knight took a fantastic one-handed catch running back.
Milton picked up his second wicket shortly afterwards, Furzard chipping to cover where young Ryan Jones took a good catch. A Merrit joined his skipper in the middle, and the youngster used a calm head to prevent Watchet getting another wicket. He finished unbeaten on 26 and Carswell, left, finished 104 not out, an excellent return for what was a superb and at times obdurate innings.
All players bowled for Watchet in an attempt to get a wicket, and a particular mention should go to Manley’s attempts at either knocking birds out of the sky or attempting to break his own toes with his left arm wrist spin as Wincanton fell well short.
