Watchet 2nd XI v North Petherton 2nd XI

Watchet 2nd XI hosted North Petherton 2nd XI on a hot day last Saturday and came away with a well deserved 159 run victory.

After winning the toss the visitors inserted Watchet, and the decision appeared to have been incorrect as openers Pete Manley and Ben Saddington made a solid if unspectacular start, despatching the bad ball whilst being circumspect with anything of good line and length, with the scoring rate staying below three an over as the pair looked to create a solid base to build upon.  Once the partnership passed thirty the two began to open out, with Manley in particular striking the ball well through the off side.  The skipper went serenely to his first fifty of the season and the partnership into three figures as the opposition began to wilt in the scorching heat.

The breakthrough finally came when Manley was trapped in front by M. Dibble for a sparkling 78, given out by guest umpire Mervyn Parsons, and two balls later Petherton had another as Ryan Strong was caught at the wicket.  There followed a slight stutter, as wickets began to fall at regular intervals as the home side attempted to push the run rate along.  Saddington reached his first second team half century before chipping back a return catch.  With a cameo twenty-three not out for Phil Sylvester the only other score of not Watchet closed on 230-9, when a total nearer 300 was well within their reach.  Dibble ended with figures of 5 for 59.

In reply the visitors were never really in the hunt, with tight bowling from all-comers making scoring opportunities few and far between.  Sylvester grabbed the first wicket thanks to a sharp slip catch by Saddington and when the same bowler ended the resistance of skipper Harris the game was up.  Further wickets came for Jamie Milton, Nigel Merrick and Ryan Jones as Watchet cut through the rest of the batting line-up, wrapping up the innings in the twenty-ninth over with the score on 71.

Watchet 2nd XI: 230-9 (P. Manley 78, B. Saddington 51, M. Dibble 5-59)

North Petherton 2nd XI: 127-3 (J. Harris 24, P. Sylvester 4-15, J. Milton 3-24)
