Watchet 2nd XI v North Perrott 2nd XI

Saturday 26th May 2007

Watchet II played against North Perrott II last weekend and came away with a comfortable victory by 58 runs.

After winning the toss on a cracking wicket Watchet elected to bat, and skipper Pete Manley and the returning Ben Saddington made a positive start, taking the score to 34 in the eighth over before Manley was bowled by N. Bond for 17.  Ryan Strong joined Saddington at the crease and the two continued Watchet’s good start, with the latter playing well hitting over the top, until he became Bond’s second victim with the score on 81.  Strong was into his stride at this point and with Jamie Milton scoring strongly on the leg side Watchet the two put on 44 before Milton was caught at the wicket.

Strong got his first league half century of the season shortly afterwards and helped by some lusty blows by David Milton the run rate continued to climb, with the two putting on 95 before Strong was bowled to give Bond his third wicket for a superb 81, an innings littered with shots all around the ground.  Milton also passed 50 for the first time this season as Watchet got themselves up to a commanding 282 for 5.

In reply the visitors began positively, and despite the early loss of their captain Heard and Bond took the score to 96 before Heard was run out after a superb direct hit from Saddington at point.  At this point North Perrott were still in with a chance, as Bond was continuing his good form with the ball with some clean hitting with the bat.  However, it was not to be as David Milton picked up two quick wickets thanks to two sharp catches from Paul Jones and Strong, and Dominic Bowden removed Bond one short of a deserved half century.

Ryan Jones picked up a wicket as well and at 155 for 6 Watchet would have hoped to gain maximum bowling points against a team that only have ten players.  However Webb and Rowlands showed a straight bat and both finished undefeated but a long way short of a winning total.

Watchet 2nd XI: 282-5 (R. Strong 81, D. Milton 59*, B. Saddington 35, N. Bond 3-62)

North Perrott 2nd XI: 224-6 (N. Bond 49, H. Heard 37, L. Webb 31*)
