Watchet 2nd XI v Long Sutton 2nd XI Played 11th August 2007 Watchet 2nd XI hosted Long Sutton 2nd XI last Saturday, and were soundly beaten by 88 runs. After winning the toss Long Sutton decided to bat in fine weather and on a hard and flat track got off to a flying start, helped out by some insipid bowling as with the exception of Phil Sylvester the seamers struggled to settle into any rhythm. It was Sylvester who got the first reward, having beaten the bat on numerous occasions he slipped in a perfect leg stump yorker to account for A. Cook. Runs continued to flow, and despite Aaron Nunn having E. Gundry caught at the wicket A. Clark and R. Long began to slip into gear, and despite a tight spell from the returning Andrew Martin the pair secured a century partnership before Ryan Jones accounted for both in a fine spell of 2 for 17 in four overs, Clark scoring a fine 80. There were further wickets for Ben Saddington and Sylvester as Long Sutton employed the long handle in the final few overs, and the innings closed on 268 for 7, with a staggering 60 extras. In reply Watchet were always up against it, and with the visitors employing a series of slow bowlers there was no pace to work with. This created some dismissals for frustrated batsmen, and Watchet were soon 38 for 4, all wickets falling to skipper R. Yandle. Paul Jones and Sylvester then started to put Watchet on the road to recovery, with a characteristic circumspect innings from Jones complemented well by Sylvester’s big-hitting style. The pair took the score to 108 before Sylvester was castled by E. Hughes for 33. Another couple of quick wickets fell as Long Sutton looked to wrap up victory early in the gathering gloom, but Jones and Nigel Merrick continued to resist before Jones fell just after reaching his first fifty of the season. Merrick was out shortly afterwards for a season’s best 29, as the innings subsided to 180 all out in the final over, with Yandle claiming seven wickets. Watchet will have to improve if they are to secure third place this season, with key fixtures in the next few weeks needing to be won. Long Sutton 2nd XI: 268-7 (A. Clark 80, R. Long 39, J. Gundry 28) Watchet 2nd XI: 180 (P. Jones 53, P. Sylvester 33, N. Merrick 29, R. Yandle 7-33) Points: Long Sutton 2nd XI 35, Watchet 2nd XI 16 LONG SUTTON 2ND XI INNINGS
