Watchet 2nd XI v Ilton 2nd XI

23rd June 2007

Watchet 2nd XI hosted Ilton’s second string on Saturday and came away with an easy 9 wicket victory.

After rain in the morning Watchet won the toss and had no hesitation in inserting the visitors.  The Ilton openers got off to a steady start, taking the score to 17 in the tenth over before Goss somewhat unfortunately chipped a Dominic Bowden full toss straight to Powis at square leg.  The following over fellow opener Knight did exactly the same off Nigel Merrick for no further score, and with the same bowler castling skipper Berry in the same over with a perfect yorker it seemed Watchet may be able to roll over the opposition for less than 50.

However, left-hander Fooks was playing his shots with some reward, and after Lonton skied a catch to cover off Karl Manley he and Greenhill took the score onto 75 before Ryan Strong took the innings by the scruff of the neck, securing his first ever hattrick to leave the 10-man Ilton team 75 for 7.  David Milton got in on the act at the end as well, picking up the final two wickets including Fooks, last man out for an aggressive, if somewhat unorthodox, 45.

Watchet started their chase well, as openers Pete Manley and Ben Saddington quickly got into their stride, hitting some powerful boundaries to take the score to 56 after ten overs at which point tea was taken.

Returning after the break Ilton took the chance to give some of their younger players a bowl to some good effect, and Manley was bamboozled by one delivery to be bowled with just four required.  Saddington hit the winning boundary four balls later to secure a maximum points victory for Watchet that keeps the top of the table in sight.

Ilton 2nd XI: 83 (A. Fooks 45, R. Strong 3-17)

Watchet 2nd XI: 84-1 (P. Manley 38, B. Saddington 36*)
