Watchet 2nd XI v Huish & Langport 2nd XI May 27th 2006 Watchet Seconds fell to their first defeat of the season on Saturday, losing by 60 runs at home to top of the table Huish and Langport. Early afternoon drizzle left treacherous batting conditions, but good application from the opening batsmen gave Huish a steady start of 29 before the first wicket fell, with a mix-up causing a run out. The visitors continued on at 3 an over, losing opener Ryan in the twentieth over for a well made 27, having chipped Dominic Bowden to Nick Richards at cover. However, this brief respite brought Curd to the wicket, and with Watts rotating the strike intelligently he began hitting the ball around the ground, smiting one mighty six clean out of the ground. However, just as it seemed Huish would score in excess of 190 Jamie Milton came into the attack, getting Curd (33) in his first over and Watts (35) in his second. Tayler Maddock then joined in, getting two wickets in his final three overs to finish with 2-54. David Milton also played his part, taking three catches as Huish and Langport closed their innings on 161-6. In reply it seemed with the sun coming out Watchet could have a chance of getting the runs with some application from the batsmen. However, Watchet found it difficult to force the pace against a well-disciplined Huish attack that made excellent use of the conditions to restrict Watchet to grabbing singles. Wickets fell regularly, with only captain Peter Manley and vice-captain Maddock coming out with any credit. Manley scored a well hit 30 before he was caught and bowled, and Maddock hit a mature 19 shepherding the tail before he fell attempting a big shot straight after smashing a magnificent six straight down the ground. Pick of the Huish and Langport bowlers was Edwards, with his excellent line and length giving him 4 for 16, with slow left armer Wall getting 3 for 30. This incisive bowling meant Watchet finished with 101, well short of their target. Watchet will need to pick themselves up for the visit of basement club Wincanton this Saturday (tomorrow), and with some key players available again will hope for a positive result. Huish and Langport II: 161-6 (Watts 35, Curd 33, Ryan 27) Watchet 2nd XI: 101 (Manley 30, Edwards 4-16, Wall 3-30) Points: Watchet II 11, Huish and Langport II 33 HUISH AND LANGPORT 2nd X1 INNINGS
