Watchet 2nd XI v Glastonbury "A"
Watchet batted first in sunny weather and a beautiful flat track, and Manley was into his stride from the off, scoring boundaries all round the ground, bringing up the teams 50 in the eleventh over with fellow opener Andy Norman. Manley continued knocking the ball around, bring up his half-century off of just 49 balls. Norman played the anchor role, scoring 53 off 72 deliveries before being caught, with the partnership for the first wicket achieving 145.
Shortly after Norman was out Manley reached his ton, and after some emotional celebrations continued putting the Glastonbury bowlers to the sword, eventually holing out to mid on for 120 from 103 balls, with a staggering 24 fours. Ryan Strong was next man to go, bowled round his legs for 10, but this brough Chris Wookey to the wicket and he made his intentions clear with a textbook cover drive for four off his first ball.
With Jamie Milton running intelligently with him Wookey reached a seasons-best 49 not out having faced only 21 balls. Milton was out for 36 just before the end, but Wookey’s fireworks had ensured Watchet achieved a superb 289 for 4.
In their reply
Glastonbury could never really keep up with Watchet’s run rate, and some
excellent bowling and fielding meant that apart from some brief periods
the home team kept their stranglehold on the game. Dominic Bowden was
first to take a wicket, forcing the injured N Munkton to hole out to Ta
Maddock was the next to strike, bowling J Moore for 21. The dangerous D Beal came in and proceeded to smash some terrific shots, with one six rebounding off the top of one of the trees at the beach end of the ground. However, his aggression was his downfall as he charged down the wicket and was bowled by Maddock.
With O Cox out shortly before for a good 26 to David Milton Glastonbury’s chances of chasing the total had all but gone. Young R Crees top scored with 40 before he was Danny Williams’ first wicket for the club, looping an edge to Norman at gully. Williams made it two shortly after, taking a good caught and bowled chance to dismiss Wade for a duck. With Bowden and Jamie Milton getting a wicket each Watchet just lost out on maximum points as the venerable numbers ten and eleven managed to see the innings to a close at 179 for 9. Watchet 2nd XI: 289-4 (P Manley 120, A Norman 53, C Wookey 49 no, J Milton 36) Glastonbury A: 179-9 (R Crees 40, D Beale 28) Points: Watchet II 34, Glastonbury A 11 Watchet 2nd XI Innings
