Chilton Polden 2nd
XI v Watchet 2nd XI
Last
Sunday Watchet Seconds managed a convincing 169-run victory at bottom
club Chilton Polden, despite only having ten players.
In humid
heat Watchet lost the toss and were put in on a treacherous track, and
this seemed a good decision by the hosting captain as he removed Jamie
Milton for a duck in the first over. With last week’s centurion Pete
Manley following with the score on just sixteen it seemed that the home
team could pull off a shock victory.
However,
Edward Martin and Ryan Strong, left, set about restoring the innings,
nudging singles into the gaps and treating the pitch with the caution it
deserved. Indeed, it was not until Martin was well set that he began
hitting big shots. Strong was scoring well behind point and unfurled
some crisp drives before he got out for 43, an innings that was worth
far more in the circumstances. The partnership realised over a century,
and from Watchet in dire straits they were now well in con trol.
Andrew
Martin, right, was promoted up the order to join his father, but
unfortunately Edward holed out shortly afterwards for a marvellous 59.
Andrew continued his good school-match form, hitting a brutal 33, and
with good contributions from David Milton and Tayler Maddock Watchet
secured a total of 218 for 7, excellent reward for a good batting
performance.
In
their reply Chilton Polden were never able to settle, with Dominic
Bowden, left, and Strong both getting wickets in their opening spells
the hosts found themselves thirty-seven for three after ten overs, and
looking set to secure some useful batting points. Maddock and David
Milton turned the game on its head though, both bowling a good line to
decimate the batting line-up.
Maddock
secured the astounding figures of 5.3 overs 3 wickets for 6 runs with 4
maidens, but Milton went one better securing 4 for 6. Chilton Polden
crumbled to 49 all out in the 21st over to give Watchet a
large and deserved victory margin.
Watchet 2nd XI: 218-7 (E Martin 59, R Strong 43, A Martin 33, J
Kingston 3-45)
Chilton Polden 2nd XI: 55 all out (D Milton 4-6, T Maddock 3-6)
Points: Watchet 2nd XI 35, Chilton Polden 2nd XI 9
