Watchet 2nd XI v Chard "A"

Watchet 2nd XI succumbed to a second consecutive defeat, losing by four wickets at home to Chard A, a side that had been comfortably beaten earlier in the season.

Watchet batted first and were quickly in trouble against the sharp accurate pace of Stacey Hawes and the exaggerated away swing of Dave Crew, with the two of them reducing the hosts to 15 for 4 in the tenth over.  Paul Jones and David Milton then affected a recovery of sorts, with the two of them using all their experience to find gaps in the field and push the side towards a competitive total.

The partnership of 62 was finally broken when Milton was caught trying a big shot for an excellent 42, and Watchet then had another mini-collapse losing four wickets for six runs, with Jones last to fall for a characteristic 28.

Nigel Merrick joined Dominic Bowden at the crease and the pair played sensibly showing a straight bat in a positive unbroken stand for the ninth wicket of 56.  This boosted Watchet to a score of 139 for 8, which was a vast improvement on a total that was looking at being well short of a hundred at one point.

Chard had similar problems when they came to bat, with Milton and Merrick reducing them to 48 for 4, with Pike scoring a boundary laden 28 before Milton bowled him round his legs.  However, just as Watchet were sniffing a chance of victory Hawes and Lunn steadied the ship, putting together a partnership of 56 before Hawes guided the ball from Bowden to Chris Cooke at gully, and the catch was taken at the third attempt.

Lunn was next to fall for an excellent 44 as Edward Martin took his third catch of the innings standing up to the stumps off Merrick.  However, it was too late for Watchet and old hand Bruce Crabb took the visitors over the finish line, despite a hostile late spell by Andrew Martin in which he was unlucky not to pick up at least one wicket.

Watchet II: 139-8 (D. Milton 42, N. Merrick 34, P. Jones 28, G. Wyatt 3-21, D. Crew 3-27)

Chard "A": 141-6 (C. Lunn 44, G. Pike 28, S. Hawes 28, D. Milton 3-42)
