Watchet 2nd XI v Chard “A” Despite a fine captains knock by home skipper Peter Manley Watchet 2nd XI lost by eight wickets in their final match of the season against Chard A. Upon winning the toss Manley elected to bat, and from ball one set his stall out to bat through the innings. Despite the loss of two early wickets Manley and Andrew Martin dug in with a solid partnership, Martin punishing anything off line or length and Manley happy to push the ball around. The pair took the score on to 117 in the thirty second over before Martin was bowled for 34 attempting to push the scoring on. With a solid platform set a score of 220 was not out of the question, however some injudicious shot selection led to a collapse, as the score subsided to 184 all out in the forty-forth over, Manley carrying his bat for a courageous unbeaten 79. When it was Watchet’s turn to bowl hope blossomed in the form of an early wicket for Martin, with Manley taking the catch at the wicket. In spite of a typically frugal opening spell from Phil Sylvester the ball was just missing the edge, some strong LBW appeals were turned down and aerial shots were just evading the fielders, as K. Pearce and S. Stoker took the score on to seventy-four before Stoker top edged a sweep, with Manley safely taking the skied ball. R. Kelly then came to the wicket, and after a slow start began upping the tempo, mixing considered defence with some big strokes, as the pair took the visitors closer and closer to the total. Some fine debut spells from Max Mallinson and Sam Broady came without reward, and the rare sight of Manley’s left arm spin was even utilised in an attempt to find a wicket, as the pair went past the victory total with five overs to spare. Watchet 2nd XI: 184 (P. Manley 79*, A. Martin 34, S. Durrance 4-19) Chard "A": 185-2 (R. Kelly 70*, K. Pearce 55*) Points: Chard A 35, Watchet 2nd XI 11 WATCHET 2nd XI INNINGS
