Watchet 2nd XI v Bishops Lydeard 2nd XI

Saturday 19th May 2007

Watchet 2nd XI played their second home match of the season at home to promoted Bishops Lydeard 2nd XI, and fell 66 runs short of their victory target against a strong team.

Lydeard’s skipper John England won the toss and elected to bat on a drying wicket, and together with T. Crowe started the innings solidly until Crowe was run out in the fourteenth over.  Having played himself in England began to open his shoulders and it looked as though Watchet could have been chasing a large total.  However, an inspired first spell from Jamie Milton saw him take three wickets including England for 49 to reduce Lydeard to 103 for 4.

When former Watchet player Chris Wookey also departed to a well judged catch at square leg by young Ryan Jones off the bowling of Nigel Merrick it seemed as though Watchet may be able to keep the visitors below 160.  Unfortunately for Watchet some good lower order biffing, combined with some wayward bowling contributing to 48 extras, took Lydeard past the 200 mark to finish 206 for 8.

In reply Watchet had no answer to a fine spell first up by W Parkman and Wookey, the latter bowling his twelve overs straight off the reel for fine figures of 3 for 23.  The home team could not put any decent partnerships together in the face of some accurate bowling.

The only real bright spots for Watchet were a fine 36 from Ryan Strong, continuing his good form this season, and a characteristic unbeaten 33 from Paul Jones which included some excellent shots for four.  Watchet closed on 140 for 9.

Bishops Lydeard 2nd XI: 206-8 (J. England 49, S. Weatherall 28, J. Milton 3-52)

Watchet 2nd XI: 140-9 (R Strong 36, P. Jones 33*, C. Wookey 3-23)
