Watchet
2nd XI v Barrington 2nd XI
5th May 2007
Watchet 2nd XI hosted Barrington’s
second string in their first game of the season and came away with a
well deserved victory by six wickets, just rewards for an excellent
all round performance.
Having lost the toss Watchet were
made to field, and it was not
long before inroads were made, Nigel Merrick bowling opener Palfrey
for six with the score on 29. Dominic Bowden then got in on the
act, first having Davis well caught by Ryan Jones at mid off and
then bowling Brister for 13. It looked then as if Barrington may
collapse for less than a hundred, but a couple of difficult chances
went down as Atkinson and skipper Wellman consolidated before the
former was well caught by Matthew Bowden at mid on off the bowling
of Merrick, pictured right.
Jones then secured a wicket, forcing
Bussell to drag on to make the score 71 for 5. At this point
Wellman was joined by Pitman, and they nudged Barrington towards a
competitive total in the face of some good tight bowling and
excellent ground fielding from what was an exceptionally young
Watchet side, with special mentions for Ed Jeromeson and Mark Bolton
for some fine stops. The partnership was finally broken by David
Milton, who bowled Pitman for 19. This left Wellman to shepherd the
tail superbly until he fell for a fine 84 in the middle of a great
spell of fast bowling from Dominic Bowden, who demolished the last
few batsmen to end with career best figures of 6 for 39. Barrington
were all out in the forty-third over for 162.
Watchet
started
their reply slowly, losing their first wicket in the thirteenth over
when Matthew Bowden was bowled with the score on 36. Skipper Manley
then set about putting Watchet ahead of the clock, hitting a series
of boundaries before he was bowled after a tired looking shot for
49. When Dominic Bowden and Nigel Merrick quickly found themselves
back in the hutch after two suidical run outs the game was in the
balance at 101 for 4. However, Watchet had time on their hands with
20 overs still to be bowled, and Paul Jones and the returning
Anthony Powis, pictured left, set about steering Watchet home.
Powis was particularly harsh on
anything off line or length and with some intelligent running and
capitalising on some poor fielding the two knocked off the required
runs with little fuss. Powis finished unbeaten on 56, some relief
after being culpable in the two run outs, as Watchet got off to the
best possible start to the season.
