Watchet 2nd XI VS Wincanton 2ndXI
3rd June
2006 Watchet II entertained bottom club Wincanton II and came away with an impressive 180-run victory, thanks in the main to a fantastic century by Andy Norman, pictured right. With the visitors depleted to just nine players they won the toss and put Watchet in on a belter of a track, and openers Norman and Pete Manley wasted no time exploiting the large gaps in the field with a series of boundaries and well taken ones and twos. The scoring rate continued spiralling, with the pair reaching the hundred partnership in the eighteenth over, and with Manley already having reached his half-century there seemed no way of slowing them down, although leg spinner King was extracting some turn Norman smashed him for a six that would surely have found the beach had the top of one of the trees not gotten in the way. Eventually Wincanton got their reward for tireless work in the heat with Manley chipping to point off visiting skipper R Carswell (2-55) for a well-hit 67, after an opening partnership of 158 in just 29 overs. This then brought Ryan Strong to the wicket, and he showed intelligent batting in nudging into the vacant areas behind point for singles, taking the pressure off Norman as he approached his ton.
Once Norman achieved his
landmark he opened out, taking four fours off consecutive scoring shots,
before he was caught on the boundary off a flat shot that had it been
ten yards either side would have cleared the boundary. Chris Wookey (17*) came in, swiftly followed by Tayler Maddock (18*), right, after Strong was bowled for a fine 31, and between them they took 33 off the last three overs to leave Watchet with a marvellous 295-3. Upon the return to the middle Watchet found that Wincanton were not going to nudge and nurdle in an attempt to gain batting points with openers Leach and R Carswell playing their shots to great affect. However, this was ended by Dominic Bowden bowling Leach for 13. After another fine over he got the next wicket as well, having Nash caught by his brother Matthew behind the stumps for 16.
Wincanton continued to
knock the ball about, with R Carswell top scoring
Credit must go to the visitors for playing with great spirit in the circumstances, never allowing their heads to drop in the field and making a go of it with the bat in a manner that some sides with a full compliment of players would not have managed. Watchet travel to Ashcott and Shapwick next week with a side missing a few players on holiday, but will hope to continue on from this weeks performance in which everyone played their part. Watchet 2nd XI: 295-3 (Norman 126, Manley 67, Strong 31) Wincanton 2nd XI: 105 (R. Carswell 31) Points: Watchet 2nd XI 35, Wincanton 2nd XI 8 WATCHET 2nd X1 INNINGS
FOR 3 295.
