WATCHET 2nd XI v ILMINSTER “A” Watchet 2d XI hosted league leaders Ilminster “A” and were easily beaten by 142 runs in a superb team performance by the top team. Watchet fielded first, and despite pressure from Dominic Bowden and Phil Sylvester the chances did not come, with a sure start from C. Burfield and J. Sainsbury putting Ilminster in command early on. Indeed, the score had moved on to 63 in the eighteenth over before Sainsbury misread a Nigel Merrick delivery to be well caught by Anthony Powis moving round from mid on. Another good partnership then developed between Burfield and P. Knight, and the two began taking the game away from the home side until Bowden returned to the attack to bowl Knight. A moment of brilliance from Jamie Milton then accounted for Burfield, with an outstanding one handed catch at extra cover giving Sylvester his first wicket for some time. A mini collapse then occurred, with Sylvester and Merrick cutting through the middle and lower order to reduce the visitors to 177 for 8. However, a fine ninth wicket partnership between L. Gray and N. Warry took Ilminster well past 200, eventually ending on 220-9. In reply Watchet started extremely circumspectly, with excellent bowling from 13 year old D. Vining and Gray producing five maidens in the first eight overs, with Pete Manley eventually succumbing, edging Gray behind for a tortuous duck. Ilminster then showed their real prowess, as none of their five bowlers used let up the pressure, as a top Watchet partnership of seventeen shows. With only three batsmen getting double figures, and extras top scoring with twenty-four, Watchet folded in the twenty-sixth over for a seasons lowest 78 all out. A great improvement will be required if they are to keep faint hopes of promotion alive at second placed Bishops Lydeard on Saturday. Ilmister “A”: 220-9 (C. Burfield 56, P. Knight 35, P. Sylvester 4-61, Merrick 3-43) Watchet 2nd XI: 78 (T. Spurway 4-18) Points: Ilminster “A” 35, Watchet 2nd XI 12 ILMINSTER “A” INNINGS
