Peasedown St John 1st XI v Watchet 1st XI Played 11th August 2007 Watchet travelled their furthest distance of the season to Peasedown St John and came away defeated by 2 wickets to the league’s bottom side. Watchet lost the toss and were asked to bat on a slow wicket, but with the boundary being small and the outfield fast there was the opportunity to score runs. Watchet got off to a steady start, thanks to the bowling of Peasedown’s captain S. Sil, who was bowling with an extreme amount of swing and pace, this caused problems for Watchet and Sil eventually picked up three top order wickets with a couple of big in-swingers and left Watchet reeling at 60-4 from 15overs. However P. Milton and J. Strong dug in and slowly started building a base for the rest of the team to work from, and slowly put Watchet into a better position. The pair put on 70 for the next wicket and then both got out in quick succession, J Strong 40 and P. Milton 30. With a platform made Martin Strong then chose to cut loose towards the end of the innings and hit a very explosive 39 with 4 huge sixes! Surprisingly though Watchet’s tail failed to wag this week and the innings closed on 207 all out, with veteran spinner C. Joyce taking 4-29 and S. Sil 4-16 Watchet’s bowling attack was weakened by the fact they were missing L. Woolgrove and M. Lovell due to other commitments and Jason Strong couldn’t bowl because of injury. Peasedown set into the Watchet makeshift bowling attack and plundered runs quickly at early doors, however just as they seemed to be taking the match away Watchet kept pegging them back with wickets. A special mention to a couple of great catches by Jason and Ryan Strong. The latter catching the dangerous Sil for a hard hitting 44. Nick Virgin’s bowling has been excellent all season for the sea-siders and again he picked up 3 vital wickets in his 12 over spell, and with 36 required with 2 Peasedown wickets remaining Watchet felt they had it in the bag with the previous lower order batsman offering little resistance. However young 15 year old K. Swift came in and hit a career best 33not out to snatch victory for the Bath team and make Watchet’s trip back home all the bit longer! Watchet 1st XI: 207 all out (J Strong 40, M Strong 39, P Milton 30, S Sil 4-16, C Joyce 4-29 Peasedown St John 1st XI: 208-8 (S Sil 44, R Warinski 41, M Strong 3-58, N Virgin 3-56) |
