North Petherton 2nd XI v Watchet 2nd XI 2nd June 2007 Watchet II travelled to North Petherton II last weekend and came away with a disappointing 35-run loss, a game that it was well within their capabilities to win. Fielding first on a track that occasionally gave trampoline bounce Watchet failed to make an early breakthrough, as Dominic Bowden and Nigel Merrick bowled without luck but with good economy. The breakthrough was eventually made in the twenty first over as Ryan Strong bowled Finch for 30 with the score on 65. As so often happens one wicket brought two as Andy Pyne had Deb caught by Merrick at deep point. The run rate then slowed further as Pyne and David Milton turned the screw, bowling plenty of dot balls and backed up by tight fielding. Indeed the pressure told on skipper Shepherd, as he scooped a sweep off Pyne into the waiting hands of Milton at leg slip. The following over Milton got in on the act, having Heath caught at mid wicket by Ben Saddington. When Pyne got his third wicket thanks to an excellent one handed catch by Strong it looked as though Watchet may run through the remainder of the batting line up. However, Watchet only got one further reward with a sharp catch by Merrick giving Milton his second wicket as the innings closed on 145 for 6. In their reply despite the early loss of both openers Watchet looked in with an excellent chance of victory with Strong and Anthony Powis scoring well for the third wicket, with Powis scoring particularly freely through the leg side. However, his wicket led to an alarming collapse, as Watchet lost 5 wickets for just 11 runs to leave them 72 for 7, thanks in the main to some good seam bowling from L. Irish. Another two quick wickets fell to leave Watchet scrabbling for batting points, and a mature innings from Ryan Jones in partnership with Matthew Bowden got the score up to 110, Bowden the last man out in the thirty-seventh over.
North Petherton 2nd XI: 145-6 (P. Shepherd 47, P. Finch 30, A. Pyne 3-20) Watchet 2nd XI: 110 (A. Powis 29, R. Strong 21, L. Irish 4-19)
