North Petherton 2nd XI V Watchet 2nd XI 17th June 2006
Watchet Seconds made one of their shorter trips of the season to North Petherton and came away with little of note, losing by 74 runs. On a pitch of trampoline-like bounce Watchet were made to field, and a sign came of things to come as Philip Milton and Chris Wookey, right, combined to miss an easy chance in the first over through a collision whilst fielding.
Watchet got their first breakthrough as returning skipper Pete Manley took a catch at gully off Ryan Strong, left, with the score on twenty-five. With even the home batsmen struggling to deal with the movement and steepling spring in the wicket and playing and missing on numerous occasions it seemed Watchet may have been able to wrap up the innings fairly swiftly. However, the batsmen rode their luck until one kept low from off spinner Tayler Maddock and bowled the other opener.
Williams and Jervis began to open up from then, and it took some well-earned good fortune for Watchet to get another, with an edge off Jamie Milton having the pace taken off it by the wicket keeper and popping up to the safe hands of Andy Norman at slip. Watchet were given another glimmer of hope, as Williams had to retire for a well hit 39 with a sprained ankle.
In the reply although Watchet were staying with the run rate they were losing wickets at a rate of knots, with three out of the top five getting ducks. Jamie Milton and Maddock then knuckled down with occasional glimpses of aggression, characterised by Maddock, left, hitting M Irish over the pavilion for six, in the middle of an outstanding spell of 7 for 33 off the bowler’s twelve overs.
Once the pair were out, both bowled, it seemed only a matter of time before Watchet would fold, with Petherton giving Watchet a lesson in bowling stump-to-stump, order of the day on such a bouncy track. Despite an excellent partnership between David Milton (29) and Danny Williams Watchet could reap only an even 100 runs, claiming five batting points. Watchet will have to improve to gain the target of moving up a division, as they are currently sitting in third 22 points adrift of the promotion places.
North Petherton II: 174 (G Williams 39 ret hurt, D Milton 5-18) Watchet II: 100 (D Milton 29, J Milton 25, M Irish 7-33)
Points: North Petherton 2nd XI 33, Watchet 2nd XI 15
