Long Sutton 2nd XI v Watchet 2nd XI Played at Long Sutton on Saturday 9th June 2007 Watchet 2nd XI took the long journey to Long Sutton II on Saturday and came away with a thrilling one-wicket victory with just two balls remaining, a game in which all 22 players played their part. After losing the toss and being asked to field on a cracking track Watchet got off to a good start as Ryan Strong bowled Cox in the third over for a duck. With Strong and Jamie Milton bowling good line and length scoring opportunities were difficult to come by, and by the time Head was bowled for 40 by young debutant leg-spinner Aaron Nunn the score was 68 in the twentieth over. When David Milton got the wicket of Yandle shortly afterwards with his second ball it looked as though Watchet could restrict the home side to a manageable total. However, despite a lack of any real support at the other end Hughes was hitting the ball well, particularly through the leg side, whilst Nunn was creating carnage at the other end, bowling his twelve overs through and finding a lot of turn to finish with four wickets. When Hughes was out for 60, well caught at point by Karl Manley, Watchet could still have kept Long Sutton below 200, especially when Strong got his third wicket and Myles Jones got one as well to leave them 183 for 9. However, the last wicket partnership could not be broken, aided in part by some ragged fielding in the closing overs, as the home side closed on 233 for 9. Facing a daunting total openers Pete Manley and Ben Saddington started positively, scoring at over five an over until Manley was stumped off Yandle for 33. Saddington and Strong then kept the runs ticking over before Saddington was bowled by Yandle’s googly, in a fine spell in which he picked up all of Watchet’s top five. However, the game came back into Watchet’s favour thanks to a marvellous innings from David Milton. Hitting the ball well over the top especially he took the visitors above the run rate, and with contributions from the lower order Watchet looked favourites to win. However, Milton holed out to mid off for 68 with 50 still required, and it was then left to the tail to guide them home, but when the ninth wicket fell with seventeen still required Watchet were indebted to the cool heads of Jones and Nunn to guide them past the required total, sparking great celebrations from the Watchet players. Long Sutton 2nd XI: 233-9 (E. Hughes 60, E. Head 40, A. Nunn 4-58, R. Strong 3-58) Watchet 2nd XI: 237-9 (D. Milton 68, P. Manley 33, B. Saddington 31, R.
