Long Sutton 2nd XI V Watchet 2nd XI

Watchet Seconds were dealt a massive blow to their promotion hopes as they fell to a 90 run defeat at Long Sutton, paying the price for a poor performance on the day.

Having won the toss captain Peter Manley put the hosts in, and Watchet were made to toil in the field with wayward bowling not helping the cause as the young seam attack struggled to cope with the slope at either end.  It was old hand David Milton that finally got a breakthrough, bowling May for 30 after a first wicket partnership of 88 in 17 overs.

Milton left, then got another couple of quick wickets, and having reduced Long Sutton to 108 for 3 Watchet had hopes of dismissing their opponents for a score under 200.  However a good partnership between the youthful Sherrin and Cox proved difficult to get through, and with both playing good shots to all parts the total was mounting.

Sherrin went past his half-century with Cox proving a good foil until he was bowled for 30, one of three late wickets for Danny Williams.  Sherrin was unfortunately run out for 88 due to a confusion between batsmen leaving both at one end, but with some late order hitting the home side set Watchet an imposing 239 to win.

The game plan from the start was to conserve wickets for an onslaught at the end, but with Brake showing excellent control from the start Watchet were unable to score at a run rate to make this a possibility.  Having removed Manley in his third over Brake bowled his twelve overs off the reel, conceding just 18 runs with 5 maidens.

Watchet still had wickets in hand however, and with Andy Norman, right, and Edward Martin finding the boundary more often it seemed that Watchet may have made a game of it.  However, home skipper Yandle had Martin caught for 27, and Watchet collapsed with only Norman’s 47 and the returning Paul Jones’ 16 not out to show for their efforts.  It was a case of Long Sutton’s bowling attack being much more disciplined in the end, with their 14 extras comparing favourably against Watchet’s 34.

Watchet will need to pick themselves up for the rest of the season, with nothing less than victory in all remaining fixtures likely to be enough from here on.
