BARRINGTON 2nd XI v WATCHET 2nd XI

played 7th July 2007

Watchet 2nd XI travelled to their first return fixture of the season at Barrington, and came away with a thoroughly deserved seven-wicket victory.

The home side were put in to bat and made a circumspect start, scoring nineteen off the first ten overs with two wickets down, both to Dominic Bowden, and in tandem with the luckless Phil Sylvester the two were letting nothing slip.  With many chances going down it seemed it was going to be a hard day in the field for Watchet, until Nigel Merrick produced a ball that was too good for home skipper A. Wellman and he was caught at the wicket with the score on 62.

The very next over Aaron Nunn got the fourth wicket, aided by a well taken catch by David Milton, to account for P. Palfrey for 24.  Merrick and Nunn then tore into the middle order, Nunn ending with 2 for 25 and Merrick 3 for 48.  Watchet’s ground fielding was exemplary, and was characterised by a sensational piece of field by Ben Saddington when he made a diving stop at mid off and threw down the stumps at the non-strikers end from a prone position with the batsman out by a yard.  Bowden then returned to clean up the tail, ending for 4 for 12 making it ten wickets against Barrington this season, as the innings closed in the thirty-fifth over on 113.

Watchet’s opening pair Peter Manley and Saddington then set about the target, with Manley content to push the singles and Saddington blocking then hitting out occasionally, exemplified by a big six into an adjacent field.  The score continued onward, and it seemed as though the two would knock the runs off between them, until Manley top edged a sweep to backward square leg for 37 after a 77 partnership.

Anthony Powis came and went quickly, but another wicket did not fall until Saddington was trapped in front with just nine required for a fine 36.  David Milton swiftly knocked off the remainder to give Watchet victory.

Barrington 2nd XI: 113 (D. Bowden 4-12, N. Merrick 3-48)

Watchet 2nd XI: 114-3 (P. Manley 37, B. Saddington 36)
