Watchet 2nd XI vs South Petherton 2nd XI
Watchet 2nd XI opened their account for the season with a six wicket victory against newly promoted South Petherton 2nd XI last Saturday, thanks in the main to a fine performance in the field.
The home side fielded first and got off to a good start, with Phil Sylvester taking a good return catch to account for visiting skipper Davis, and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with variable bounce making things difficult for the batsmen. Excellent fielding from youngsters Mark Bolton, Ryan Jones and Aaron Nunn the pressure mounted, with Nunn capitalising on confusion to affect a run out after Sylvester had taken his second wicket.
Nigel Merrick was brought into the attack and got a wicket in his first over thanks to a good low catch by Norman Yaw at mid-on. When Nunn was brought into the attack he took two wickets, one due to a fine stumping by skipper Pete Manley.
Despite the clatter of wickets at the other end young opener Worwood continued accumulating runs, and despite some strokes of luck was the only batsman to go into double figures. When he fell for 45, LBW to one that kept low from Sylvester, the innings was quickly wrapped up, after further wickets for Yaw and David Milton. South Petherton were all out for 93 in the thirty-sixth over.
In reply Pete and Karl Manley got Watchet off to solid start, taking the score to 30 in the ninth over before both were undone by balls for Worwood that kept very low. Anthony Powis and Yaw came together and mixed good defence with some powerful shots for four and their partnership of 47 as good as won the game for Watchet.
Yaw was bowled trying another big shot, and Powis followed soon after fending at a ball that leapt off a length, but Milton took Watchet past the winning line in the twenty-second over with three consecutive fours, to secure a winning start for a young home team.
