Cheddar Colts v Watchet 2nd XI
Watchet 2nd XI made it two wins in two with a comprehensive win at Cheddar Colts, with the victory grounded in a fine fielding display particularly in the first half of the Cheddar innings.
After being asked to field first on a damp but fairly decent track Watchet got off to a flier as Nigel Merrick and David Milton both got two early wickets as the youthful Cheddar top order crumbled, with the highlight a fine return catch from Milton to dismiss Houghton. With a slow outfield allied with some fine ground fielding Watchet turned the screw, as Karl Manley came into the attack to grab two quick wickets and leave Cheddar in deep trouble at 39 for 7.
Home skipper Hartley then came to the wicket, and allied with N. Bamber set about rebuilding the innings, as Watchet began to become a little ragged. It was Merrick that broke the stand, deceiving Hartley with a slower ball that was chipped to Ryan Jones at point, Cheddar's captain departing for 32. The innings was swiftly wrapped up after that, Merrick ending with four wickets as Cheddar were all out in the forty-second over for 92, an innings that contained no boundaries.
In reply Watchet struggled to force the pace with the ball not coming on to the bat, resulting in both openers holing out. With another batsman run out shortly after Watchet needed a steadying hand at 30-3. In an uncharacteristic innings the returning Martyn Ketchen, in alliance with Manley, began to take Watchet towards the winning post with a priceless partnership of 42. Although both fell in the latter stages the game was won, with Milton hitting the winning run in the twenty-fifth over. Credit must go however to a fine performance from a very youthful Cheddar side, some of who will surely grow into talented cricketers. Cheddar Colts 92 (J. Hartley 32, N. Merrick 4-28, K. Manley 3-9)
